English File Student's Site

Hi Everybody, Here is something for the Chatterbox class. It is the online resource centre for a very good book- English File. If you want to brush up on an area of grammar you will find links to a lot of resources on this Website. It is divided into different books, from beginner to advanced. You will probably want to look at the Intermediate or Upper Intermediate books. Anyway take a look and as always, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to get in touch! A comedy of errors

Hi Everyone, Perhaps you are fed up of Trump and the US election, but here is a very funny news story about a press conference that was announced by Trump on the day he finally lost to Joe Biden. It was held in the car park of the Four Seasons Total Landscaping garden centre, in Philadelphia between a pornography bookshop and a funeral parlour. Why was such an important pressconference held in such an obscure location? Read the article and find out 😂 Keep on digging: Trump team holds press conference at suburban garden centre

Ain't got no, I got life- Nina Simone

Hi Everybody! Do you know the expression have got- as in, How many brothers and sisters have you got? '? It is very common in English, but students often avoid using it.  Well, I've got a secret to tell you! There is another way to say 'I have got...'. It is very informal and is most commonly used in songs. It is Ain't got ... In fact Ain't can substitute 'I'm not', 'you aren't', 'she/he/it isn't', 'we aren't', 'they aren't', 'I haven't', 'you haven't', ' she/he/it hasn't', 'we haven't' and 'they haven't'. It is only used in the negative form, and sometimes the subject (I, you, she, etc...) is also omitted to make it super-informal! If you consistently use ain't , you can avoid a lot of English grammar.  BUT ... ... it is very informal and I don't recommend that you use ain't all the time! You will hear it in songs, however.  Here

Scholars warn of collapse of democracy as Trump v Biden election looms

Hello Everyone, This post is mainly for my Monday 'chatterbox' class, but anyone is free to join in.  A group of historians, specialising in totalitarianism and fascism, have warned that democracy is being undermined around the world. On the eve of the presidential election in the United States, I thought it would be interesting to hear you opinions on this topic. Here is a link to a Guardian article on the topic: Scholars warn of collapse of democracy as Trump v Biden election looms Read the article and leave a comment with your response- you can either respond in writing below or leave a spoken response by voicemail on the class Whatsapp group. Here are some questions that occur to me: Do you think it is true that we are seeing democracy being undermined? Democracy seems to be the highest and most prized value of our culture- is it possible that it is a bit outdated, at least in its present form? What do you think is the state of Spanish democracy? How about Catalan democracy
