Classes d'anglès a l'estiu

Benvinguts i benvingudes al bloc English in Alpens! 4.    Una

The Battle of Cable Street

Here is a link to a Website with information and resources relating to the Battle of Cable Street, a confrontation in the east end of London between Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists (BUF) and protesters from the local community in 1936. Mosley had organised a pro-fascist march through this largely Jewish area of London and the local population, along with anti-fascist protesters from around the country, turned out in big numbers to prevent the march from taking place. Their slogan was, They Shall not Pass, and they didn't! The Battle of Cable Street: 80 years on

A Fairytale of New York

Here is one of the most popular Christmas songs in the UK and my personal favourite- A Fairytale of New York. It is a raucous Duet performed by The Pogues' Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl. The lyrics are quite difficult and it is full of swear words and obscenities, but it tells a story which ends up being quite touching, it is very funny and the tune is fabulous! So Chatterboxes- can you tell me what the relationship is between the two singers in the song? A Fairytale of New York It was Christmas Eve babe In the drunk tank An old man said to me, won't see another one And then he sang a song The Rare Old Mountain Dew I turned my face away And dreamed about you Got on a lucky one Came in eighteen to one I've got a feeling This year's for me and you So happy Christmas I love you baby I can see a better time When all our dreams come true They've got cars big as bars They've got rivers of gold But the wind goes right through you It's no place for the old When

Last Christmas

Hello, Here is a Christmas song for the Wednesday Workout class. It is a classic from the 1980's- I remember slow dancing to this at school discos when I was a teenager : Last Christmas   How do you pronounce the words in BOLD ?   What is the meaning of the expressions in italics ?   Last Christmas   Last Christmas I gave you my heart But the very next day you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special   Last Christmas I gave you my heart But the very next day you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special   Once bitten and twice shy I keep my distance , but you still catch my eye Tell me baby, do you recognize me? Well, it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me "Merry Christmas" I wrapped it up and sent it With a note saying "I love you", I meant it Now I know what a fool I've been But if you kissed me now, I know you'd fool me again

Go Tell it on the Mountain

Hi Everyone, Here is the African American Spiritual Go Tell it on the Mountain . It expresses joy at the news that Jesus has been born. The chorus is quite easy to understand- and the tune is infectious- perhaps you will want to sing and clap with the choir! Anyone can enjoy this song, but it is especially good for the Tuesday Activation class! Go Tell it on the Mountain Go tell it on the mountain Over the hills and everywhere Go tell it on the mountain Our Jesus Christ is born   When I was a seeker I sought both night and day I asked the Lord to help me And he showed me the way   Go tell it on the mountain Over the hills and everywhere Go tell it on the mountain Our Jesus Christ is born
